Ingredients
- 1 cup Basmati Rice
- 1/2 cup Chana Dal (Split Bengal Gram)
- 2 medium Onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1 Bay Leaf
- 2-3 Cloves
- 1 Cinnamon Stick
- 2-3 Green Cardamom
- 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
- 2 Green Chilies, finely chopped
- 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp Oil or Ghee
- 2 cups Water
- Fresh Coriander Leaves, for garnish
Method:
- Step 1: Rinse and soak the rice and chana dal separately in enough water for at least 30 minutes.
- Step 2: In a deep bottomed pan, heat oil or ghee over medium flame. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then add bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon stick, and cardamom. Saute for a few seconds.
- Step 3: Add sliced onions, ginger-garlic paste, and chopped green chilies. Saute for 2-3 minutes until the onions turn translucent.
- Step 4: Add red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a minute.
- Step 5: Drain the water from the rice and add it to the pan. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes until the rice turns slightly translucent.
- Step 6: Drain the water from the chana dal and add it to the pan. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Step 7: Add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the flame to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it cook for 10-12 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and all the water has been absorbed.
- Step 8: Once the Chana Dal Pulao is cooked, switch off the flame and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork.
- Step 9: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or any side dish of your choice.
